Our seat eliminates the foam, duct tape and set-up time, but there is more to be done. In our minds, stability doesn't need to come at the expense of efficiency. Adding our outriggers to an efficient kayak lets all of your effort go into gliding through the water, and when they are mounted on a Current Designs kayak, the package is complete.
We start with kayaks direct from the Current Designs factory, and make all the modifications in our shop. We add our seat (including a deck-mounted tilt adjust mechanism that allows easy tilt adjustment from outside of the cockpit and gives rock-solid support), hatch mounted outriggers, and we strip anything out of the cockpit that could cause skin injury or cause the paddler to get hung up on wet exits (including removing the foot-pegs and any protruding hardware). Our primary concern is for safety, and making all of the modifications in our shop ensures the safest experience on the water. It also means your kayak arrives ready to paddle, and that you'll be able to be on the water in minutes - not hours.
For those starting out in adaptive paddling for the first time, we recommend the Kestrel line from Current Designs, especially the open cockpit Kestrel 120OC. This kayak gives the best access for transfers, and is the easiest to exit in the event of a capsize. It is also our most affordable package, starting at around $1500 for the kayak (rotomold version), seat, and outriggers. Any of the Current Designs line is available, and we’d be happy to assist you in making the best model choice for your paddling style and ability. Other brands and models are also available, but we can offer the best pricing and delivery with Current Designs (and we’ve found them to be fantastic to work with as a company).
Our outriggers were initially designed and built by Spring Creek. Their designs are tough, well thought-out, and beautifully made (here in the USA) – and they are great people to work with. We take their original design and modify it to mount on the flat back hatch of a kayak (specifically for Current Designs, but it can be made to fit any kayak with a flat rubberized hatch). This allows the outriggers to be mounted without modifying the kayak deck at all, and lets the outriggers be transferred from one kayak to another, simply by removing the hatch cover – this is especially useful for programs with a fleet of kayaks. The outriggers can be mounted in two positions – either tight to the hull for maximum efficiency, or out from the hull for maximum stability. They can also be easily removed, all with the push of a button. We also supply Spring Creek with plastic from Current Designs to color match their kayaks (The outriggers are available in yellow, red, mango and smoke). So not only do they function well, but they look great too!
